Attention all recruits! Enlist in the 5th Regiment for an afternoon at Historic Fort Snelling. "New recruits" (ages 8-12) will learn about the lives of soldiers during the 1820s at Fort Snelling. Campers will learn to march and drill, watch musket and cannon firings and much more. Space is limited to 12 per day.

Take a walking tour of St. Anthony Falls, led by a costumed museum interpreter portraying William de la Barre, the Austrian engineer who spent half a century developing Minneapolis’ flour milling and waterpower. Visit the Minneapolis Riverfront, the west side milling district, and the Stone Arch Bridge, learning the many changes to the falls over time.

Come out to Mendota for some live jazz on the lawn! Bring friends or a date, have a drink and enjoy great music in a beautiful spot. Local jazz legend Butch Thompson will serve as bandleader and guest speaker, telling stories of Mendota's rich jazz history. Butch will be on piano and clarinet, and will be joined by special guest Charlie DeVore on trumpet, Tom Andrews on drums, Steve Pikal on bass, and guest vocalist Lee Engele. Bring a blanket, a lawn chair and a picnic basket. Cash bar provided by Lucky's 13 Pub. Made possible by the Friends of the Sibley Historic Site.

Watch spectacular fireworks displays on the Minneapolis Riverfront from the comfort and premium viewpoint of the Mill City Museum Observation Deck. Seating is strictly limited to 50 people, so you won't be crowded, and if the weather turns wet, you can move inside to the glassed in portion of the Observation Deck. Make your reservations here or by calling the Museum ticket desk at 612-341-7582 (MHS Members should definitely make the reservation by phone in order to secure your $5 Member discount). On the evening of the fireworks, you will enter the museum at 710 South Second Street (doors open at 9:30pm).

State Capitol One-Day Civil War History Camp (Ages 9-12) 07/11/13
Campers (age 9-12) will explore the role Minnesota played in the Civil War. They will hear from a costumed character playing a Civil War veteran, learn about equipment and uniforms worn by soldiers, take on the role of a soldier and write a letter home, create a newspaper front page, make a map of the battles, go on a scavenger hunt to crack a Confederate code and play a game of cat and mouse on the Capitol lawn. Campers will also tour the Capitol and examine historic battle paintings and newly conserved battle flags on display. Campers should bring their own bag lunch. Morning and afternoon snacks will be provided.

Campers (age 9-12) will learn about the unique artwork in the State Capitol and on the Capitol Mall through tours and a variety of hands-on activities. They will have the opportunity to create a new memorial for the Capitol Mall in clay and present their design ideas to the group, create a color wheel, pose for a Governor's portrait and design a Capitol-themed tee-shirt to take home. Mill City Live Night

Mill City Live returns for a 10th season with four outdoor concerts on Wednesday evenings in August.

Set in the museum's dramatic open air Ruin Courtyard, "Mill City Live" features four great evenings of outdoor music by top local artists.

Time: 6 to 8 p.m. Fee: $5 includes concert and museum admission from 4 to 9 p.m., an opportunity to visit Mill City Museum at a significant discount. Free for Minnesota Historical Society members at the door; all others, $5.

All advance tickets are $5. Advance sales end at 3:00 pm the afternoon of the concert. Door sales ($5, Free for MHS Members) start at 4:00pm.

In case of rain, Mill City Live goes on indoors!

Boy Scouts can use this class to work towards their Bugling Merit Badge. Space is limited to 10 per camp.
